Men's jewellery

The ancient Egyptian men loved a bit of jewellery. From highly jewelled pectorals and headwear to elaborate bangles, the ethos was ‘more is more’, especially when it came to the amount of gold and stones used. The Aztecs also liked a bit of adornment, as did the Celts, and during the French Revolution it’s hard to know who wore more jewellery, the men or the women. Then somewhere around the late Victorian era men got less adventurous, and since then the male jewellery box has only contained a watch, a wedding ring, cufflinks and, at a push, a tie pin.Faddy Pandora Beads And Exclusively For Smart Women .

“For a majority of men, it’s a mindset that has been created over many years, that jewellery is seen as a watch and cufflinks,” explains jewellery designer Matt Foster, who designs for both men and women. “Certainly for those men whose jobs have them in suits, it does not lend itself to displaying jewellery and there is also a work etiquette that doesn’t allow for visible pieces or overly elaborate cufflinks.”The other factor could also be that, after quite a few years of not wearing jewellery, men are unsure about accessorising.“I think a lot of men tend to see jewellery as an additional item to their wardrobe and not as a necessity to dressing up an outfit the way women do, unless they are into a scene such as music or fashion where jewellery is part of the lifestyle,” says designer Maria Lau.

However, the number of jewellery role models is starting to expand thanks to male jewellery designers who started making pieces for the hairier sex because they wanted items that they could wear themselves. This also means that men have got more options than ever when it comes to purchasing pieces. “The selection of men’s jewellery now on offer is amazing and men are choosing to be more experimental with their accessories and enjoying the luxury of newer products,” says jewellery designer Stephen Webster. “The rules have certainly changed when it comes to men wearing jewellery and they are becoming more comfortable with it. The trick is finding their comfort zone. Some men jump in but others are more tentative. A bracelet is a good start.”
